Following months of speculation, King George VI announced on 9 July, 1947 that his eldest daughter was to marry.

"It is with the greatest pleasure that the King and Queen announce the bethrothal of their dearly beloved daughter, The Princess Elizabeth to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, R.N., son of the late Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Andrew (Princess Alice of Battenberg), to which union The King has gladly given his consent."

The fairy tale wedding on 20 November, 1947 was to mark the beginning of one of the world's most celebrated marriages. The simple service conducted at Westminister Abbey was followed by a lavish reception at Buckingham Palace and, to the delight of cheering crowds, the newly-married couple made the traditional appearance on the Palace balcony.

Almost a year after the marriage, on 14 November, 1948 the couple again celebrated, this time the birth of their son, Prince Charles. It was at this time the couple, with their new baby, moved out of Buckingham Palace and into Clarence House, a home of their own. The births of their other three children, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward followed, the latter and youngest being born on 10 March, 1964.

During their 50 years of marriage the couple have undertaken official visits to all fifty member states of the Commonwealth. Throughout their busy schedule they have shown a tireless devotion to duty, earning them respect not just in Britain but the world over, while at the same time fulfilling their role as devoted parents and grandparents
