VancouverCoins is proud to offer this extremely important and scarce early fur trade “Bayonet” Dag Blade. Although there are no obvious discernable markings, this blade is identical to ones made by John Sorby (England), for shipment to the North West Company trading posts in the USA & Canada.

In July 1821, a merger agreement was signed with the Hudson's Bay Company, whereby the North West Company name disappeared after more than forty years in existence. At the time of the merger, the amalgamated company consisted of 97 trading posts that had belonged to the North West Company and 76 that belonged to the Hudson's Bay Company. The NWC remaining trade goods inventory was also absorbed by HBC in their merger in 1821. This Dag Bayonet is one of very few surviving blades traded in the earliest of the North American fur trade.

The blade and tang together measure almost exactly 11 inches. The blade itself is 7 inches long to the edge of the notch. The notch itself is approximately .25 inches wide. From the top of the notch to the base of the tang measures another .5 inches. The tang itself measures approximately 3.125 inches long and .5 inch wide and .125 inches thick. This blade is probably one of less than a few dozen of this type that made it to as far West as Alberta, and is one of very few museum quality 100% authentic “bayonet” Dag type blades with provenance that have ever been offered for sale.

As well, by definition this is one of the earliest fur trade items actually used for barter or trade with an attributable value, and thus should be considered an “odd & curious” numismatic type item. The blade itself has excellent original overall eye appeal and will prove to be a most excellent investment.

Vancouver Coins purchased by private treaty the John Bartleman HBC collection from his Grandson, and Great Grandson.
