The Star Wars Classic Collection from the New Zealand Mint has grown with the release of a new coin honoring everyones favorite droid from the feature-film franchise: R2D2. The release of this fourth coin in the series brings the image of a droid that can only be described as mischievous and lovable.

Without the spunky little R2-D2, lovingly referred to as just Artoo, it is conceivable that Luke Skywalker might never have met with destiny. It was Artoos determination and resourcefulness that helped guide Luke to the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi in the open film of the Star Wars franchise, initiating his involvement with the Rebel Alliance.

Artoo was featured throughout the films in the Star Wars franchise at Lukes side, often riding in his X-wing fighter and helping to put out fires, some literal and some figurative as Luke fought for the Rebels. R2-D2 is the fourth coin release in a series that includes Darth Vader, Han Solo, and Yoda coins preceding it.

On the reverse side of each 2016 1 oz Niue Silver Star Wars R2D2 Coin is the image of Artoo as you first encounter him in the films, being sold to Luke and his step-uncle Owen Lars by a group of Jawas. Engravings include only the coins weight, purity, and metal content.

The obverse side of the Star Wars R2D2 coin features the right-profile portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this depiction includes engravings surrounding it of the nation of issue, face value, year of issue, and Her Majestys name.

These coins are a product of the New Zealand Mint, a private facility located in Auckland. Though it is the only mint in New Zealand, it is not the nations official sovereign mint. Official currency is struck elsewhere for New Zealand.
