2012 Canada $1 25th Anniversary of the Loonie Fine Silver

In 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Loonie, the iconic Canadian one-dollar coin bearing the image of this great Canadian symbol. Like its namesake, the Loonie has proven resilient, emblematic, and long-lived.

This shining silver dollar's reverse image, designed by Robert-Ralph Carmichael who designed the original circulation Loonie in 1987, offers a meaningful twist on the iconic Common Loon image featured on the Canadian 1-dollar circulation coin. Centered around the number '25' to commemorate the Loonie's anniversary, two Common Loons swim majestically past one another, one admiring the Loonie's eventful journey over the last 25 years while the other looks to the future and the many adventures to come for Canada's world-famous 1-dollar coin. The loons' distinctive feather markings and other physical features, including neck rings, mottled back feathers, and smooth heads, are engraved in dimensional detail. The wake and ripples that churn the water as the waterfowl paddle peacefully on still waters are likewise engraved in fine detail, as is the rugged conifer-lined rocky shoreline in the background.
